What classifies something as kosher?

To qualify as kosher,  mammals must be cloven-hoofed and chew the cud  . Fish must have removable fins and scales to be considered kosher. Kosher species of meat and poultry must be ritually slaughtered in the prescribed manner to be kosher. Meat and dairy products cannot be cooked or consumed together. To be kosher, wine must contain at least 9.6% alcohol and cannot be fermented with non-kosher products or derivatives. All fruits used to produce wine must also meet kashrut requirements.

What is a non-kosher product?

The Bible lists the basic categories of foods that are not kosher. These include certain animals,  birds and fish  (such as pig and rabbit, eagle and owl, catfish and sturgeon), most insects, and any shellfish or reptiles.

How is kosher certification done?

The procedure begins with a complete inspection of the production site and facilities. If all requirements are met, an official kosher certificate is issued.

– A supervisor must be present during production.

– Production must take place in a separate room from non-kosher items.

– All equipment and containers used must be dedicated to kosher products only and kept separate from other equipment.

Kosher certification does not guarantee that a product is free from contamination; It only ensures that the production processes are in accordance with Jewish law.

Why do companies receive kosher certification?

The main reason for receiving kosher certification is a marketing advantage. Consider the case of a multinational company with subsidiaries in several countries. The company will benefit from the labeling of kosher certified products, not only in its country of origin, but also in all countries where it is present. This allows consumers to choose kosher products when available without having to search locally.
